Hundreds of parameters are taken into account by Google to determine the position of a site in search results. there is one parameter not to be neglected, it is the authority of your site, also called domain authority.
The higher your authority is, the higher you appear in the SERP. you get more traffic easily.
So how to optimize your DA? Let’s see it together.
What is domain authority?
A metric developed by Moz, domain authority is actually a score between 1 and 100 that helps determine a site’s ranking, 100 being the best value.
It is important to know that a new site automatically starts with a score of 1, but don’t be discouraged if you are in this situation: it is much easier to increase your AD when your score is low than when it reaches 70 or 80.
Another important thing to keep in mind is that your Domain Authority may decrease even if you haven’t touched the parameters used to calculate your score. This drop can be caused by another site that has received a large number of links for example.
You have to understand that the score of your DA does not only depend on you, but also on the other sites with which you are in competition. Your goal is to have a higher authority score than a number.
How is the domain authority calculated?
The score is calculated from more than 40 factors.Of course, we won’t go into details, but here are the most important ones:
1.The number of backlinks: beware, here it is better to have links from several sites rather than getting 20 backlinks from 2 different sites.
2.The MozRank: a score based on a scale from 0 to 10 (10 being the best score), the MozRank evaluates the quality of the links.
3.The MozTrust: this metric also evaluates the quality of links but more specifically since it judges how well your site is linked to other trusted sites.
The quality of the content
4.Social signals: the number of shares, likes, or comments are taken into account.
5.Compliance with good SEO practices
A domain authority between 40 and 50 is a good average, but your score will be considered excellent if you pass 60.
To evaluate your DA, you can install the free Google Chrome MozBar extension.
How to improve your domain authority?
Now let’s get to the heart of the matter and see together the improvements you can make to your site to increase your domain authority.
- Publish easy link content
Since links play an important role in the calculation of the AD score, you have to do everything possible to get incoming links, and this is above all due to the quality of your content.
Publish long content in which you can discuss a topic in depth. Guides or tutorials are great for this. You can even create graphics within your article.
- Ensure the quality of your on-page SEO
In SEO it is necessary to differentiate between on-page (or on-site) SEO and off-page (or off-site) SEO.
The first includes all the actions aimed at improving the content of your page or your site, while the off-page SEO focuses on links.
A quality content requires following points:
- Titles and meta descriptions optimized for natural referencing
- An adapted use of Hn title tags
- A good structure of your URL
- Media optimized for SEO
- Natural use of keywords (no over-optimization)
- A quality internal network
- Finally, make sure your content is up to date.
- Make sure your site is responsive
Having a responsive site is no longer an option: today it is mandatory. Indeed, searches from a smartphone or a tablet are increasing and Google is much better at referencing the so-called mobile-friendly sites.
Go to Google’s mobile optimization test to find out if your site is responsive. You will receive recommendations to improve the interface of your site.
- Improve the loading time of your pages
A site whose content is slow to be displayed scares away not only the Internet users but also Google’s indexing robots and will negatively impact your domain authority. It is therefore in your best interest to optimize the loading time of the pages of your site.
To do this, start by removing unnecessary plugins, especially if your site was created from a CMS such as WordPress. Also make sure that your site is up to date.
Then optimize the size and weight of your images and don’t integrate your videos directly into your site: use platforms such as YouTube.
On mobile, I advise you to create AMP (Accelerated Mobile Page) pages.
- Increase your social credentials
As we saw earlier, social signals are taken into account to determine your domain authority score. This means that you have to make your content popular to get likes, shares, retweets, and comments.
First, make sure your social network pages are properly configured. You need to return a professional image and your profiles need to be consistent with your brand image.
Then, be active! Publish content, animate your community by creating contests, quizzes, etc, like and share content from other pages, reply to comments.
Finally, encourage the sharing of your content by adding buttons on the different pages of your site.
- Be patient
This will be our last piece of advice: be patient.
Increasing your domain authority takes time, especially if you already have a good score. You have to wait for your site to be crawled, and that you can’t control.
In the meantime, constantly improve your site and your SEO. The effects can only be beneficial.
